• Condor flew their inaugural service between Frankfurt and Tel Aviv yesterday.

“American Airlines is extending its suspension of operations to Tel Aviv, Israel (TLV) through March 28, 2027. We will proactively reach out to impacted customers of this schedule adjustment, offering options in line with our customer-friendly schedule change policy.”

Good evening from Jerusalem, where we celebrated at a Bar Mitzvah yesterday and spent a surreal Shabbos with family, rejoicing over the news that Iran’s regime leadership had been eliminated, but also rushing in and out of safe rooms all day as Iran’s missiles and Israel’s defensive measures fought in the skies above us.

I shared some of our experiences today on our Instagram stories.

With G-d’s help, Israel and the US will help bring true peace to the Middle East and the world. We pray for the mission’s success and for everyone in harm’s way.

Israeli airspace is closed until at least noon (10am UTC) on Tuesday, 3/3.

Jordanian airspace is also closed, so for those who need to leave Israel now, traveling down to Egypt’s Sharm El Sheikh/SSH is the best option. Airports in Abu Dhabi and Dubai have also been under Iranian attack, as have several other Middle Eastern countries, so the safest bet for now is to shelter in place.

If you are a foreigner in Israel, you can register each member of your party here with Chaim V’Chessed for a rescue flight out of the country. The more people who sign up for one, the more likely it is that evacuation flights will be prioritized.

El Al has paused flight sales through 3/21 to prioritize space for existing ticket holders.

• After repeated inquiries from DansDeals, American finally extended its Tel Aviv travel waiver.

• American has canceled flights through 9/8.
• El Al will resume flying to dozens of destinations this week, with full service resuming later this month.
• Hoping to avoid a repeat of previous proposed fines for price gouging, El Al has capped prices on flights in economy and premium economy through August.

Update, 4/5:

• Israel is once again allowing 100 passengers, up from 50, per departure from Tel Aviv.
• El Al will only operate rescue flights through at least April 18.
• United has cancelled flights to Tel Aviv through at least September 7. You can rebook travel to/from Athens or request a refund.
• Other airlines have cancelled more dates, full cancellation dates have been updated below.

Update, 3/29:

• Egypt is price-gouging those entering at Taba for $120 in cash per person. This fee was $25 earlier this month, before climbing to $60, and now $120. That’s besides for cash you may need to bribe officials or for taxis from the border to Taba, Sharm, or Cairo airports.
• Arkia has cancelled numerous flights from Aqaba, Jordan, after Jordanian authorities revoked their flight permission. You can find their latest flight updates here.
• American has cancelled flights to/from Tel Aviv through 7/1.
• Air Canada has cancelled flights to/from Tel Aviv through 9/7.

Update, 3/25:

• Delta has now cancelled JFK and Atlanta-Tel Aviv flights through 9/5 and Boston-Tel Aviv flights indefinitely. The cancellations will be processed in Delta’s systems on 3/28. You can request a refund or reschedule with no difference in fare through 2/28/27. You may be able to ask to be reboked onto El Al.
• Lufthansa Group has cancelled flights to/from Tel Aviv through 5/31.
• Due to government restrictions, El Al is only flying limited flights to JFK, Newark, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Paris, Rome, and Athens, with just 50 passengers per plane from Tel Aviv. Reservations for flights booked from Tel Aviv through April 4 are canceled, including the corresponding return flights. A notification has been sent to all affected passengers. Ticket sales for outbound flights from Israel are closed through April 15
• Israeli airspace is now closed for non-rescue flights until at least 1pm (10am UTC) on Thursday, 4/16.

Update, 3/23: Many foreign carriers have extended their cancellation dates, including Air France, LOT, and more. Delta has officially cancelled flights through 5/31, and United has officially cancelled flights through 6/14. Cancellation dates have been updated below.

Arkia announced that due to the new rules, they will be moving most of their flights to Aqaba, Jordan, and Taba, Egypt. They will only offer very limited service from Tel Aviv to Athens and Larnaca. Their schedule for this week will be published shortly.

Israir announced they will only serve Athens, Larnaca, Rome, Tbilisi, and Addis Ababa. They will be cancelling existing reservations to other cities made through April 8th.

Air Haifa will continue operating from Tel Aviv, with flights to Athens and Larnaca.

El Al announced that they will only fly a small number of flights to New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Paris, Rome, and Athens. They are updating their schedule and will then notify affected passengers. El Al seat availability from Tel Aviv will be down 95% from normal.

El Al is also asking the Israeli government to reopen Eilat/ETM Airport to process more passengers in and out of the country.

“EL AL calls for the opening of Ramon Airport as a complementary alternative to Ben‑Gurion Airport, in order to maintain aviation activity and support the needs of the traveling public.”

Are you trying to fly from Israel to the US before Pesach? Will you travel via Egypt or Jordan due to the new restrictions?

Update, 3/22 at 6pm: The new restrictions are confirmed and will go into effect Monday at 5pm Israel time. The full protocol will be sent to airlines Monday morning, and airlines will begin cancelling people after that point.

Update, 3/22 at 3pm: After pressure from aviation officials to close Israeli airspace completely, Israeli media is reporting that the number of passengers allowed per flight from Tel Aviv will be reduced to just 50 passengers starting tomorrow. Additionally, the number of flight takeoffs per hour will be reduced from 2 per hour to 1 per hour starting tomorrow. Considering that widebody aircraft have required 2 slots this month, it’s unclear what this will mean for widebody flights.

Flights to Israel are not subject to any passenger cap, but will face significantly reduced flight landing slots. It may also be very difficult to find a flight from Israel if outbound caps remain in place.

Expect many flight reservations to be cancelled in the coming days.

Alternate options include flights from airports like Taba/TCP, Sharm/SSH, and Cairo/CAI in Egypt and Amman/AMM and Aqaba/AQJ in Jordan. Many of the pros and cons of these options and tips are discussed in this DDF Thread and on the DansDeals Facebook Group. 

Note that in the past, some people have reported that religious articles (Talis, Tefillin, Seforim) have been confiscated when entering or leaving Jordan. Generally, this has been reported to happen when they are visible outside of baggage, so be sure all religious articles are packed away when entering and leaving Jordan or Egypt!

Update, 3/18 at 5pm: After 3 private planes were damaged by Iranian missiles at Ben Gurion Airport, Israel will no longer allow full flights to the US.

Effective immediately through at least Saturday evening, US flights are capped to 130 passengers per flight. El Al’s 787-9 Dreamliners have a capacity of 293 passengers, so that means many passengers will be receiving cancellation notices shortly.

When Israel previously lowered the cap from 200 to 100, the airport scene was extremely chaotic. I’d expect that to be the case over the coming days as well.

El Al has shared the following update,

“Following a directive from the Home Front Command to reduce the number of passengers departing on flights to the United States by 50%, to approximately 130 passengers per flight, about half of the passengers currently booked on these flights are expected to receive cancellation notifications. We apologize for the inconvenience and recommend that customers who wish to depart as soon as possible consider alternative travel options.

Passengers whose flights are canceled will be eligible for a full refund or a voucher.

In addition, due to the new Home Front Command restrictions, EL AL is currently suspending the assignment of additional passengers to flights to the United States.

At the same time, no changes are currently expected to flights from the United States to Israel.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused and continue to work closely with the relevant authorities. EL AL is prepared to respond immediately to any changes in the Home Front Command guidelines in order to increase the number of flights and passengers.”

Update, 3/18 at 12:20pm: 

• Only Israeli airlines (El Al, Air Haifa, Arkia, and Israir) are currently allowed to operate from Tel Aviv, with operations limited to rescue flights, with flight and passenger caps.
• El Al is cancelling all flights between 3/21-3/27 to/from: Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Tbilisi, Budapest, Zurich, Barcelona, Belgrade, Berlin, Batumi,  Frankfurt, Heraklion, Krakow, Larnaca, London/Luton, Lyon, Marseille, Bucharest, Paphos, Prague, Chisinau, Thessaloniki, Sofia, Salzburg, Podgorica, Tirana, Tivat, Venice, Vienna. “At this stage, due to current restrictions, we are unable to offer alternative flights for customers whose flights have been canceled. We are offering a full refund or a credit voucher for future EL AL travel. Regarding the U.S. canceled gateways, we will make every effort to rebook customers whose original destination or gateway in the United States was canceled onto an alternative active destination in the United States, subject to availability.”

Update, 3/17: Delta has stopped sales on Israel flights until 6/1, and United has stopped sales of Newark-Tel Aviv flights until 6/15 and other Tel Aviv flights until September. Expect official cancellations to follow in the coming days.

Update, 3/15: Israeli media is reporting that a tentative deal will allow all flights from Israel to the US to operate at full capacity starting tomorrow! Flights to Europe will be allowed to carry up to 170 passengers.

Currently, flights are capped at just 100 passengers, which has caused many foreigners to be unable to find a flight back home.

An El Al spokesperson said they are closely watching developments and will make an announcement once they are confirmed by the government to the airline.

In the meantime, El Al has closed sales of flights from Tel Aviv through April 15th.

Update, 3/13:

• Americans with canceled flights can register for a flight from Tel Aviv to JFK or Newark.
• We made it back to Cleveland this week, despite El Al’s woes, by flying Air Haifa. El Al shared its response to the problems it has been facing and what it is changing going forward.
• Delta extended its cancellations through at least the end of the month, and will delay its Atlanta-Tel Aviv resumption until at least August. Delta now has a generous waiver, allowing anyone with flights in March or April to reschedule for travel anytime through February 2027 with no change in fare!
• Israeli airspace is now closed for non-rescue flights until at least noon (10am UTC) on Monday, 3/23.

Update, 3/7: The US government has started offering evacuation flights to some people who have filled out the Crisis intake form and the Chaim V’Chessed form. These flights are free of charge and won’t be billed later on, as opposed to the rescue flights after the 10/7 massacre.

Update, 3/6: Air Haifa, Arkia, and Israir are now selling flights from Tel Aviv to Europe starting on Sunday, 3/8! You can book flights on their sites or from a travel agent.

El Al is assigning seats on the flight starting Sunday based on the order of previous cancellations.

Up to 70 people will be allowed per flight and flight operations will be limited.

• I’m still hunkering down in Jerusalem with my family, where we are running in and out of shelters as missiles rain down on the Holy Land. I explained some of our thought processes to remain here for now on our Instagram stories. 
• Rescue flights to Israel on El Al resume tomorrow. No passengers will be allowed to depart from Israel due to restrictions on gatherings. In addition to the flights below, five flights from North America and three flights from Bangkok are expected to depart tomorrow to Tel Aviv, with cities and times to be determined. Passengers with existing tickets will be contacted by El Al to rebook onto rescue flights.
• Israeli airspace is now closed for non-rescue flights until at least noon (10am UTC) on Monday, 3/9.

• After Taba, Egypt (TCP) became overloaded with flights, Arkia has moved several flights from there to Aqaba, Jordan (AQJ). The problem is that some Jordan customs agents will not let you into the country with religious items like Tefillin, in which case you may want to consider cancelling and booking alternate travel from Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt (SSH), as several readers have had problems and have missed their flights out of Taba, which doesn’t normally handle commercial traffic.
• Wizz Air has significantly increased its flight schedule from Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt (SSH) to Europe.
• Arkia is flying from Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt (SSH) to/from JFK via Lisbon on Friday, and will be adding more flights on that route.

Update, 3/2: Arkia, Bluebird, and TUS are now selling flights between Taba, Egypt, and destinations like Athens, Larnaca, and Rome through 3/7. More dates will be added if flights fill up.

El Al will not be offering flights to Taba.

Update, 3/1: Israeli airspace is closed until at least noon (10am UTC) on Friday, 3/6.

Arkia is selling flights between Taba, Egypt, and Athens, Larnaca, and Rome for travel in either direction over the next few days. If those flights sell out, expect more dates to be added.

Passengers arriving in Taba and crossing the border into Israel will find Egged buses outside the terminal to Eilat Central Bus Station, Be’er Sheva Central Bus Station, Ben Gurion Airport (long-term parking), and Tel Aviv Savidor Center.

Israel also announced that the Taba border crossing between Eilat and Taba will be open 24/7 to allow for people to enter and exit the country at all hours.
