At the risk of stating the obvious and in hopes of preventing other people from making the same "late night small screen no readers" mistake I made the other day, this is for the regular Kindle with the sunken display, not the more premium Kindle Paperwhite with, among other improvements, the nice flush display.

Also, this is the 12th gen version from 2024, which is more than adequate! But you should know that the 2026 13th gen (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FXJ9PGSJ) is coming out in a few weeks. Up to you if it's worth the price difference.

Also note that at this very moment there's a jailbreak for current versions called Vera. This may or may not have been a factor in me opting for the 2024 PW6 model.

It allows you, among other things, to run an alternative reader app called Koreader which offers endless customization options through a robust plugin system.

For example, I added the ZenOS plugin (which makes the Koreader interface really nice and cohesive) and then set up a button to rotate my screen 180 degrees so I can move it over from my right side to my left when I'm reading in bed. It's a small thing but really useful to me. You can also install puzzle games, like Sudoku, Solitaire and Crossword. And you can set up a Home Assistant plugin, or pull in articles from Wallabag, or connect to your Tailnet, just to name a few things.

A YouTuber by the name of DammitJeff has a great video on it (plus a few more later):

It's kind of a cat and mouse game in that Amazon is constantly releasing new firmware updates to patch the holes these jailbreaks use. So there are 'windows' where you can jailbreak your kindle. The Vera jailbreak is in such a window right now where you can apply it to current 2024 Kindle version. I got my Paperwhite delivered yesterday and had the jailbreak running in less than 10m, all on the device. Just follow the steps carefully, super easy.

Here's the link to the jailbreak:

Edit: added some more details.

This or a library card?

This with library card is killer combo. Libby can send library ebook straight to kindle.

Bro I jailbroke last year and reverted back immediately. I just didn't see the value.

Did it again last night and after spending hours tinkering with KOReader which has a horrendous settings interface, I am in heaven. It's configured exactly the way I want it now!

I have the 2021 Paperwhite (10th gen) and honestly the sweet spot right now is the 2024 paperwhite base model with the new Amazon $35 clicker remote. No case. Just put it on a LISEN Kindle arm next to bed, and you're in heaven for bedtime reading Smilie

I've jailbroken my 11th gen Paperwhite a few years ago and I've jailbroken my 12th gen Paperwhite with Vera a few days ago.

This AND a Library card. ( Though I prefer a Paperwhite because I like to read at night. )

When new books are released, my local libraries orders a lot more Kindle editions that physical books and they get them in sooner.
And I don't have to waste any time or gas picking them up and returning them.

Do you know if Kindle or a Paperwhite will work with Libby and Hoopla from my local library? I'm trying to decide which device to get. Thanks!

I'm in the Silicon Valley and with the Libraries here the majority of the e-books are available in the Kindle format. But yes I have seen Libby and Hoopla as options also.

You can just log in to your local library, browse the Titles you are interested and then see what Checkout options are.
